As the only remedy against first-instance judgments of regional courts, the appeal on points of law is of great relevance in criminal cases. Although the appellate courts review judgments solely for errors in law, and therefore only to a very limited extent, an unlawful judgment by a court of first instance may be corrected, in individual cases, by a compelling statement of grounds for the appeal.
Appeals on points of law are also available against the imposition of administrative fines, which is of particular importance in the area of antitrust law.
